For m.michele, the sounds words make are just as important as the meanings they have. In truth, we don’t speak poetry; we sing it, each in our own unique way.

Poetry by m.michele provides windows into her thoughts and feelings, not just of today but of the distant past. “She showed me that feeling a little blue is not always such a bad thing and, just as importantly, that when I do, I am not alone.” – Courtney/SELAH attendee”

What is poetry?

People have been trying to answer that question for centuries: What is poetry? If you look in the dictionary, it’s a very dry definition. Just like when you try to define the word love, it’s very hard to define it.

You can talk about the elements of poetry: image, rhythm, metaphor. But that doesn’t really define it, either—those are just some of the elements. Robert Frost said, “A poem begins as a lump in the throat.”

"These are poems relating not only to times of personal anxiety but to unreal times we live through as people," - Newsweek

Poetry, it may appear, is back. Yet in many ways, it has never been away. According to a recent article in the Bookseller magazine, poetry has shifted units worth close to £100 million over the past 14 years, and the industry’s two most recognisable accolades, the Forward Prize and T.S. Eliot Prize, have been awarded annually since 1992 and 1993, respectively. They now offer a combined £40,000 to their various winners and shortlisted poets. – Howard Swains/Newsweek

“Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
‘Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.”
