Girl group Red Velvet just had their latest comeback with Feel My Rhythm with a concept based around the famous painting The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch. Let’s talk about it!
Red Velvet is a five member girl group under the label SM Entertainment, formed back in 2014. Their newest album is titled ‘The ReVe Festival 2022 – Feel My Rhythm’ with 6 tracks. The music video was released two days ago on March 21, 2022 with 14 million views and 1.4 million likes, and still counting. They are known for their rare and unique concepts, that they make work in an elegant and gorgeous way.
I can’t think of another group that pairs so well with the painting. The Garden of Earthly Delights, a triptych oil painting done in between 1490 and 1510 by the artist. A little is known of Bosch’s life or intentions, interpretations of his intent range from an admonition of worldly fleshy indulgence, to a dire warning on the perils of life’s temptations, to an evocation of ultimate sexual joy. Overall a beautiful and fascinating piece that can be interrupted in many ways.
The team behind Red Velvet’s latest music video took pieces from the iconic painting and implemented them in genius ways. They have different members inside of flowers and peaches similar to the painting. They also feature dancers dressed as birds and other unfamiliar creatures. The settings vary in color based on different parts in the triptych, and also include various textures in the video similar to a painting. The most familiar ties are seen through a creature with a hollow body that the 5 members sit inside of, along with buildings similar to those of the artist.
I for one loved the concept, and enjoyed the music video very much. It’s always amazing to see art history inspiring new art! If you’re interested in watching the music video, click here. Enjoy!
